Litanies are among the oldest forms of Catholic prayer — call and response intercession prayed since the earliest centuries of the Church. Each invocation draws the soul deeper into prayer.

Respond to each invocation: pray for us. Begin with: Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Respond to each invocation: pray for us. This litany invokes the great defender of the Church, commander of the heavenly armies, and guardian of souls.

"Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the divine power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen."
